[edit] Appearance
Sark is about 6'0 tall and thin with a frame best suited for speed, agility, and versatility of movement. For the most part, he dresses in business suits and will, every now and then, dress in more casual clothing, depending on the circumstance, although even his more casual attire can be seen as being more elegant or refined than most. He has an extremely boyish face that makes him look just a little bit younger than he actually is and would give him the impression of innocence, if his face weren't almost permanently etched into an expressionless mask. His hair is thick, blonde, and seems to be the only thing unruly about his entire appearance as it is more often than not sticking out at odd angles and his eyes are a striking blue color which, for some reason, give him the perpetual look of a kicked puppy whether he realizes it or not. It's his eyes that can generally give away his emotions when he's under extreme duress. He doesn't cut a very imposing figure at all unless he has a gun in his hands and most people are quick to note how young he looks, especially when it comes to business endeavors.
[edit] Personality
Sark is overly ambitious, smarmy, placid to the point of having no emotions, and highly violent when provoked into action. He is also a coward, known for his ability to give up every detail of his employer's grand scheme if he's captured to save his own life. He routinely shifts his alliances to whatever side he thinks will suit his purposes and seems to be on no one's side but his own, even while he's serving whatever master will suit his purpose currently. Despite all that, he's polite and formal to even the people he fully intends to kill (especially to the people he intends to kill). He never loses his cool, save in situations where he has no control or can't forsee a easy out or an outcome that works in his favor, and situations like that generally turn him into a complete mess, especially if he thinks he won't make it out of the situation alive.
He's mature for his age, which allows him to cut deals with people far older than himself and has led him to become a leading operative in whatever organization he happens to be working for. He hates to be taken lightly because of his age and anyone (at least in his own world) showing a certain amount of disrespect for him will be happy to learn exactly why he's regarded as one of the best... With a bullet to the head.
His primary objective in any endeavor is to survive, so while he lives for risks and the thrill of danger, if he finds that the situation has become too much for him to handle and may eventually segue into a threat to his life, he will find some way to put an end to his current alliance. This, of course, is easier when you have contacts and other people to help you take down your former employer.
Despite his criminal background and his occupation as a terrorist, Sark doesn't believe in unnecessary violence or torture. If he's going to hurt someone, he wants to have a reason for it... It doesn't have to be a good reason, but it has to suit a purpose. He's not a sociopath- he's a businessman. He takes no pleasure in hurting people and is fully aware that his actions are distasteful, but he shows no remorse for them.
While not open about these aspects of himself, he is, in fact, capable of compassion and love, despite what anyone might think. It just takes a hell of a lot to bring those emotions out, given that he tries to keep them locked away... They always show up, however, as evidenced to how he gets emotionally attached to his lovers and occasionally little psychic girls.
[edit] History
Sark was the bastard son of Andrian Lazarey, a descendant of the Romanov family with a sick wife who couldn't conceive. His brief affair with a married woman ended with the woman's death and her husband shoving an infant Julian in Lazarey's face. Stricken with grief at the physical proof of the betrayal of the sick wife that he loved dearly, he took great pains to ignore young Julian as best he could. After his wife died, Lazarey became more of an abuser than anything and eventually sent the son he denied he had to a prestigious school in England at a very young age.
Sark was a prodigy in every way that mattered and prematurely ambitious on top of that which meant he excelled faster than most of his peers. This attracted the attention of one Irina Derevko, a former KGB agent, who picked him up at the age of thirteen and started grooming him into an operative. Her lessons were often cruel, but they eventually broke him of almost every bit of human emotion (or at least locked those emotions away so tightly that it's taken a bunch of psychics since he came to the Rift to get them out again) he had within him and groomed him into a nearly heartless killer that he is currently, eventually becoming one of the top agents in her criminal organization.
During his stint as Irina's henchmen (and eventually Arvin Sloane's henchmen), he met Sydney Bristow, a CIA agent and Irina's daughter whom he became oddly infatuated with and while Sydney got in his way more often than not and was often almost at the wrong end of his gun, he often found himself propositioning her for an alliance. What he feels for Sydney is an extremely complicated emotion and it might be the closest thing to love that he's ever felt... Or it might just be him seeking the unattainable. Either way, it's quite clear he's a little bit obsessed with her in a sense.
Before coming through the Rift, Sark was engaged in a lengthy search for artifacts created by a man named Milo Rambaldi with Irina and Sloane in the hopes that they could unlock Rambaldi's greatest secrets and uncover his endgame with the CIA in hot pursuit of them.
And then the Rift happened.
[edit] Beyond the Rift
Immediately after falling through the Rift (in a sewer, no less, as if that was going to be some clever indication of how badly his life was going to suck in this universe), Sark walked into an alliance with Calisto and while acting as her lackey (and lover, although that's putting it nicely), he never actually did much of anything (other than be creepy at a few people and had Kara Kendricks be creepy at him). This would prove to be beneficial towards keeping himself alive, as towards the end of Calisto's reign of terror, he was captured by Vincent Sterling and brought to the Conrad Hotel where, under threat of torture by Jack Harkness (who, at that moment was using the alias John Thane- this will be ironic later) he revealed Calisto's location and defected to the Conrad, where he would eventually remain, utterly bored and backed into a corner, completely unsure of what to do with himself. Not helping matters is the fact that not long after his arrival, a guardian angel bonded herself to him... Neither of them was really happy about that and they still have one of the most awkward relationships ever.
Sometime before his capture by Vincent, he met April who became the subject of much confusion to Sark at first, although he eventually came to be fond of her. Their relationship grew stronger after April snapped as a side effect of being exposed to feargas and upon returning to the Hotel after having been returned to normal found Sark to be an understanding shoulder to cling to. Ever since that moment, they've been closer than family and April's one of the few things that Sark truly cares about.
However, the universe does not like to provide Sark with continuing happiness. One of the first things he did upon arriving in the Conrad was find a kindred spirit in Martha Jones, who also had a grudge against an employee of Calisto's, namely Amarantha Shepard (who made a threat against Sark's life when she heard he'd defected, which is enough to produce a grudge, really). He trained Martha in sniper techniques with the intention of having her take out Shepard while he lured her out, but the plan was a bust and Sark left the encounter badly injured and Martha abandoned the plot for more constructive goals.
Not making things better, one by one, people from his own universe began to arrive, including Marshall Flinkman (who came with information regarding Sydney Bristow's alleged death), Michael Vaughn (who just existed, which is cause enough for alarm in Sark's world), and eventually Sydney Bristow, herself (who was so far back on the timeline that she had no clue who he was).
Not to be deterred by these turns of events (and determined to convince Sydney that she was meant to be a spy and only that), Sark found himself a contact in the form of Dick Johnson who provided him with a mission to assassinate Kate Hunt and he conscripted Sydney to be his partner in the endeavor. Sydney killed Kate, but this didn't get her any further on his side.
Life continued on as normal, but when John Thane arrived on the scene and kidnapped the Doctor, Sark found himself desperately getting involved in a scenario he really felt no obligation to be in when April followed the Doctor into the breach and wound up captured. Working alongside Torchwood and the Vesmier, he wound up offering himself up as an agent when it came time to attempt to take down Thane, despite this being a risky maneuver and one bound to fail.
And fail it did, rather spectacularly. Sark was captured by Thane in the attempt, and, after being tortured and perceived as useless, was slated for execution unless he could come up with a reason Thane might spare him. After fourteen hours with a metal skewer in his chest, Sark had only one option if he wanted to survive- he offered Dmitri Lang up as a sacrifice in his place, but Thane wouldn't accept the offer, instead proposing a counteroffer- namely April. Scared for his own life and afraid of what might happen to April if she continued to be held in Thane's clutches, Sark agreed to the terms and, for all intents and purposes, led April right to the slaughter, as far as he knew. Thane let him go and he immediately contacted Sydney and proceeded to break down on her. Not knowing what else to do and feeling guilty for his actions, he had himself incarcerated in a Wanderer prison as a means of exile. It was here, he eventually learned that April hadn't been killed at all- merely taken by a green rift- and the two of them were reunited, although April was now several years older.
Still incarcerated, Sark was offered his freedom by the Vesmier shortly after Thane's downfall (it was also around this time that Riftpower Roulette occurred, leaving him briefly a tiger), but he declined the offer, being content to stay there and avoid Torchwood for awhile longer until he could figure out where he was supposed to go from there. This, unfortunately, made him easy pickings for Jack Bristow, who very nearly had him sent away as punishment for his actions, and McKenas Cole, who attempted to recruit him into The Organization. The latter Sark refused, leaving Cole enraged and determined to find a way to get through to him, although Sark has no memory of this encounter thanks to some very potent tranquilizers.
Sark's refusal of Cole's offer came back to bite him on the ass when Cole kidnapped Sydney and April in order to lure him out. In a fit of panic, Sark shifted into a ferret (his other shapeshifter form) and fled prison to wind up at the Kashtta Tower, hoping to find Jack Bristow and leave him to deal with it, since his last rescue attempt failed so dismally, but Jack was detained in Switzerland, leaving Michael Westen and Fiona Glenanne as Sark's only available assets. After returning to human form and receiving a shotgun and clothes, the three of them set out for Cole's bank and after a lengthy confrontation involving ambushes and acid sprinklers, Cole presented Sark an ultimatum over the intercom- either he turn himself in or Cole will start offing every one of his friends. Not wanting to play the coward again and figuring Cole won't actually keep his word and driven by a determination not to lose April again, Sark agreed to Cole's terms and was escorted to the eighth floor where Cole was keeping his hostages where he concocted a crazy plan and convinced Cole to let him have a moment with Sydney and April before he released them. He then proceeded to completely weird Sydney out by reciting poetry in various languages at her and practically attempting to make her angry in order to distract and confuse Cole long enough for him to slip her a paperclip so that she could pick the lock on her cuffs.
Cole eventually got annoyed enough to pull Sark off and faced with possible torture or letting Cole see Sydney trying to escape, he took the torture, goading Cole into using his powers on him and Cole, in a moment of utter crazy pushed a bit too far, leaving Sark weakened. Sydney managed to escape and despite trying to recover from the effects of Cole's ability, Sark succeeded in retrieving his shotgun and delivering a gutshot to Cole, but that was all he could manage, leaving April to make sure Cole's end is a violent one and a sympathetic Sydney to put him out of his misery (as Sark shifts back into a ferret to hitch a ride on April's shoulder). The three of them, plus Michael and Fiona, managed to escape the building just as it caught fire and exploded courtesy of Fiona.
Sark returned to the Kashtta, a little less broken than he was while in prison, but still utterly confused about what he's meant to do with himself. All he knew at that point was that backtracking into his old life was impossible now and he's just not sure how far he can push the morality side of things before he hits another stumbling block and screws up again.
Thankfully, at the Christmas Ball, he found a kindred spirit in the form of Suzie Costello and Ariel provided him and April with a new apartment, so... Life's starting to look a little better.
....Except for the part where the Organization is stalking him.
